Demonstrations & Experiences

Quick Facts

If images are worth a thousand words, experiences are worth a thousand images. In Mobile HCI 2009 we mixed the Demonstrations and the Mobile Experiences tracks into one Demonstration and Experiences track that provides a space for researchers and practitioners to bring hands-on experiences to conference attendees. We want to see and try your prototypes, services, devices, systems and any innovative example of mobile experiences or interactions. We encourage making your demonstration visually or otherwise appealing and presenting it in an innovative way, to attract the participation of attendees.

The submission processes for Demonstrations and for Mobile Experiences are slightly different so please take a close look at both of them and choose the kind of submissions that better fits your interest.

Demonstrations

Demonstrations provide an opportunity to present a hands-on demonstration of your work, research, service, prototype or product addressing one or more of the suggested topics as presented in the general call for participation.

Demonstration submissions should have a maximum of four pages (including figures) and they should be accompanied by a one page specification of the infrastructural requirements. By default, one table, two chairs, one poster board with enough space left for one A0-sized poster in portrait orientation, 220-230V 50Hz power (CEE 7/4 socket), and internet connectivity (both fixed Ethernet and Wi-Fi) are available. The demo area has proper GSM, GPRS and UMTS indoors reception, at commercial (roaming) tariffs. Please specify which of these default facilities you intend to use and whether you have additional wishes (e.g., a 17″ LCD screen). The Demonstrations Chair will investigate infrastructure and equipment possibilities for the accepted demonstrations.

Participants are expected to bring the necessary equipment to the conference site with them. Demonstrations will be presented during the conference on Wednesday, September 16, 2008.

Your extended abstract should be submitted by Friday, May 08th, 2009 at 5:00 PM CEST Berlin to the Conference Review System, according to the ACM MobileHCI 2009 Proceedings format. The file must be no larger than 4 megabytes. It should be accompanied by a one page specification of the infrastructural requirements.

Confidentiality of submissions is maintained during the review process. All rejected submissions will be kept confidential in perpetuity. All submitted materials for accepted submissions will be kept confidential until the start of the conference.

Accepted proposals abstracts (including figures) of the demonstration will be distributed in the supplementary conference proceedings on CD-ROM. They will also be placed in the ACM Digital Library, where they will remain accessible to thousands of researchers and practitioners worldwide. Submission of the final camera-ready version includes and is not complete without giving us permission to distribute your final camera-ready version as described above. This permission is given during submitting the final version of your work via the Conference Review System.

Mobile Experiences

Mobile Experiences is a large-scale field test for mobile applications still in R&D phase. It enables researchers to test their applications in a real-life setting with a potential user group of hundreds of conference attendees. The test period is not only during the conference, but also before and after the conference, so that the users can take advantage of the applications in their daily life. Mobile Experiences can be regarded as a display window where users are not only allowed to look but also to experience the best, most innovative and smartest mobile applications installed on their own mobile phone or PDA and could provide valuable feedback to the designers and implementers of the mobile application.

The rules are simple:

  • Your mobile application should be available for a period of 6 months, and free of charge to the conference attendees
  • Users should be able to install the application on their mobile phone or PDA by themselves, and the application should scale to 500 users without problems. (This is the difference with demonstrations, where a successful one-time demonstration on the presenter’s own device is sufficient).
  • You need to deliver an appealing description of your application, that will be published on this website
  • This description contains at least
    • the application name
    • abstract (400 words max)
    • keywords (3 max)
    • a link to an installation and usage manual
    • a link to a feedback form
    • a list of supported devices and/or operating systems
    • name, affiliation and email of the responsible researcher
  • You need to present your application in a 1-minute talk in the poster and demo madness session during the MobileHCI conference.

On the MobileHCI 2008 website all submissions will be publicly displayed, encouraging users to install the applications on their own phones, and to try them in practice. The users will be able to rate the different applications on the MobileHCI website. During the conference, we will already present the half-time score, and after the test period has ended, the top 3 rated applications will be publicly announced and earn a highly visible place on the conference website. But the main award for all displayed applications is the feedback from the conference attendees who used your ideas and implementations in practice. We do expect that this provides new ways to convey your message and ample inspiration for the future development of the mobile applications in your line of research.

Optional archiving of Mobile Experiences

Additional to your Experience Proposal, you can send a four page extended abstract covering your mobile experience, to be considered for archival on the supplementary conference proceedings on CD-ROM and ACM Digital Library. It will be reviewed after acceptance of your experience. Please keep in mind that your extended abstract could be rejected even when your experience was accepted.

The time schedule for Mobile Experiences is:

  • Submission Deadline: Friday, May 08th, 2009 at 5:00 PM CEST Berlin
  • Notification of acceptance: Frida, June 05th, 2009 at 5:00 PM CEST Berlin
  • Start of experience period: Monday, June 15th, 2009
  • Conference: Tuesday, 15th - Friday September 18th, 2009
  • End of experience period: Friday, December 11th, 2009

Submit your proposals to the Conference Review System on or before the deadline of Friday, 8th May 2009 at 5:00 PM CEST Berlin using this Word MobileExperiencesTemplate.doc. If you want to submit the optional extended abstract for archiving consideration, submit it according to the ACM MobileHCI 2009 Proceedings format accompanied by the proposal formatted according to the MobileExperiencesTemplate.doc. In both cases, the file must be no larger than 4 megabytes.
